50 Friends Trivia Questions That’ll Prove Who Actually Watched and Who Just Had It On in the Background

By
Shannon Jackson
People enjoying a movie night with 3D glasses in a cinema, eating popcorn.

The most common wrong answer I’ve ever tracked across years of running friends trivia nights isn’t about an obscure guest star or a throwaway line. It’s the answer to “What is Chandler’s job?” People get it wrong constantly, which is the entire joke of that character for ten seasons, and watching someone realize that in real time is one of my favorite things about this topic. Friends is a show everybody thinks they know. The gaps between what people remember and what actually happened are where the best questions live.

I built this set of 50 friends trivia questions the way I’d build a night at a bar: some layups early to get people talking, some gut-punch questions in the middle that split the room, and a closer that makes everyone go quiet. If you’re using these for a game night, pace them. Let people argue. That’s where the fun actually is.

The Ones You Think You Know

1. What is the name of the coffee shop where the six friends hang out?

If you miss this one, close this tab and go watch the show. You’ll have more fun than reading trivia about something you haven’t seen.

Show Answer
Central Perk

2. What is the name of Ross’s first wife?

I say “first” and watch people’s eyes flick upward as they count. That pause is everything. Ross has three ex-wives, and the order trips people up more than you’d think.

Show Answer
Carol (Carol Willick). Common wrong answer: Emily, who was actually his second wife. People remember the wedding drama more vividly.

3. Monica and Ross are siblings. Which one is older?

This one reads easy but I’ve seen confident people get it backwards. Something about Ross’s personality makes half the room assume he’s the younger one.

Show Answer
Ross is older.

4. What instrument does Phoebe play when she performs at Central Perk?

Show Answer
Guitar

5. What phrase is Joey Tribbiani’s signature pickup line?

The real test is whether someone can say it without doing the voice. Nobody can.

Show Answer
“How you doin’?”

6. What are the names of Ross and Monica’s parents?

Everyone remembers the mom being critical of Monica. Fewer people can name both parents without hesitating.

Show Answer
Jack and Judy Geller

7. Rachel gets off a plane in the series finale. Where was that plane going?

Show Answer
Paris. She had accepted a job with Louis Vuitton.

The Details That Separate Watchers from Rewatchers

8. What is Chandler Bing’s job for the majority of the series?

This is the question I mentioned up top. It’s practically a running gag that nobody on the show or off it can remember what Chandler does. The answer is genuinely boring, which is the point.

Show Answer
He works in statistical analysis and data reconfiguration (IT procurement/data processing). The show itself makes a joke of this , in “The One Where No One’s Ready,” the friends can’t describe his job, and in the game show episode, Rachel and Monica lose the apartment partly because they can’t answer this question.

9. In “The One with the Embryos,” Ross hosts a trivia game between the guys and the girls. What do Monica and Rachel lose as a result?

This episode is basically the Super Bowl of Friends trivia. It’s a quiz within the show, and the stakes are real.

Show Answer
Their apartment. They have to switch apartments with Chandler and Joey.

10. What is the name of the Geller family’s dog when Ross and Monica were growing up?

Show Answer
Chi-Chi

11. Joey doesn’t share food. But what is his favorite food?

People shout “pizza” immediately. They’re wrong, and they know they’re wrong the second someone else says the right answer.

Show Answer
Sandwiches (specifically referenced multiple times, including “The One with Ross’s Sandwich” and his love of meatball subs). Common wrong answer: Pizza. Joey loves pizza, but sandwiches are his documented obsession.

12. What store does Phoebe find a severed thumb in, leading to her receiving compensation?

Show Answer
It’s not a store , she found the thumb in a can of soda. She received $7,000 from the soda company.

13. What is Monica’s biggest pet peeve?

This comes directly from the quiz episode. If you’ve seen it once, the answer sticks. If you haven’t, you’ll guess “messiness” and be completely wrong about who this character is.

Show Answer
Animals dressed as humans

14. Ross has a son named Ben. What is the name of his daughter?

Show Answer
Emma (with Rachel)

15. What was the name of Joey’s stuffed penguin?

People who watched as kids remember Hugsy like a member of the cast. People who watched as adults somehow don’t.

Show Answer
Hugsy

16. Before she became a chef, what was Monica’s job at the 50s-themed diner?

Show Answer
Waitress at the Moondance Diner, where she had to wear a fake chest and a blonde wig.

17. What is Chandler’s middle name?

This is one of those questions where the answer sounds made up. It’s not. The show drops it exactly once and moves on.

Show Answer
Muriel

Guest Stars and the People Who Passed Through

18. Which actor played Rachel’s boyfriend Joshua?

Show Answer
Tate Donovan. Here’s the layer: Donovan and Jennifer Aniston were dating in real life when he was cast, and they broke up during filming. He later said those episodes were some of the most difficult work he’s ever done.

19. Bruce Willis guest-starred as the father of one of Ross’s girlfriends. What was his character’s name?

Willis did the role because he lost a bet to Matthew Perry on the set of The Whole Nine Yards. He donated his entire salary to charity. Knowing that makes the answer better.

Show Answer
Paul Stevens

20. Which future Oscar winner played Ross’s girlfriend Charlie Wheeler?

Show Answer
Aisha Tyler

21. Winona Ryder guest-starred as a college friend of Rachel’s. What was her character’s claim about their past?

Show Answer
That she and Rachel had kissed in college. Rachel initially denied it, then eventually remembered.

22. What was the name of the character played by Tom Selleck?

People remember Selleck’s mustache more than the character’s name. Which, honestly, is fair.

Show Answer
Dr. Richard Burke, Monica’s older boyfriend

23. Ben Stiller plays a man Rachel goes on a date with. What is his defining character trait?

Show Answer
He has rage issues , he screams at everything. His name is Tommy.

24. Reese Witherspoon plays which character?

Show Answer
Jill Green, Rachel’s spoiled younger sister

The Ones That Start Arguments

25. How many times has Ross been divorced?

I have literally watched people count on their fingers and still get it wrong. The marriages blur together. Name the wives in order if you want bonus points at your game night.

Show Answer
Three times (Carol, Emily, Rachel). Common wrong answer: Two. People forget the drunken Vegas marriage to Rachel, or they remember it but don’t count it as “real.”

26. In the trivia game episode, what was the name of Chandler and Joey’s pet chicken?

Everyone remembers the chick and the duck. Almost nobody remembers which name went to which animal.

Show Answer
The chicken was “the Chick” and the duck was “the Duck.” They didn’t have proper names , but people constantly invent names for them. If someone at your table says “Yasmine,” that was the name of Joey’s imaginary friend, not the chicken.

27. What apartment number did Monica live in at the start of the series, and what did it change to?

This is a production error that became canon, and it’s one of my favorite pieces of Friends trivia to deploy because it rewards the obsessives.

Show Answer
It was originally number 5, then changed to number 20. The producers realized that apartment 5 wouldn’t make sense for a unit that high up in the building, so they quietly changed it.

28. What color is Monica’s apartment door?

You’ve seen this door thousands of times. Commit now before you second-guess yourself.

Show Answer
Purple (specifically a lavender/purple). The frame around the peephole is gold/yellow.

29. What is Phoebe’s twin sister’s name?

Show Answer
Ursula. She also appeared on Mad About You, played by Lisa Kudrow, which technically makes Friends and Mad About You exist in the same universe.

30. Ross and Rachel’s first kiss happens in which location?

People say “the apartment” or “Central Perk.” The actual answer is more romantic than either of those, which is probably why people misremember it. We simplify things.

Show Answer
Central Perk , but specifically outside in the rain, after Ross comes back when Rachel discovers his feelings from the prom video. Common wrong answer: at the laundromat. That’s where Ross and Rachel have a significant moment earlier, but the actual first kiss as a couple happens at Central Perk.

Deep Cuts , The Stuff Casual Fans Don’t Carry

31. What is the name of Phoebe’s most famous song?

Show Answer
“Smelly Cat”

32. Joey played Dr. Drake Ramoray on a soap opera. What was the name of that soap?

Show Answer
Days of Our Lives

33. How did Dr. Drake Ramoray originally die on the show within the show?

The writers gave Joey’s character a death that was both absurd and perfectly soapy. It’s the kind of detail that makes people laugh when they hear it again.

Show Answer
He fell down an elevator shaft.

34. What fake name does Joey use when he’s pretending to be someone else?

Show Answer
Ken Adams

35. Phoebe legally changes her name after getting married. What does she change it to?

This one’s a trap. People say “Phoebe Hannigan” or “Phoebe Buffay-Hannigan.” They’re both wrong.

Show Answer
Princess Consuela Banana-Hammock. Mike retaliates by threatening to change his name to Crap Bag.

36. What was the name of Ross’s monkey?

Show Answer
Marcel. Marcel was a white-headed capuchin who went on to “star” in other projects , the show jokes that Marcel was in a movie.

37. Rachel’s first job in fashion was at which store?

Not Bloomingdale’s. Not Ralph Lauren. Those came later. The first one is humbler and people forget it exists.

Show Answer
Fortunata Fashions (though she also briefly worked at a fashion company doing personal shopping before Bloomingdale’s). Her big career breaks were Bloomingdale’s and then Ralph Lauren.

38. What was the name of Chandler’s annoying roommate who replaced Joey?

Show Answer
Eddie Menuek, played by Adam Goldberg. Eddie was unhinged in a way that felt genuinely unsettling for a sitcom.

39. What hangs on the back of Monica’s apartment door?

It’s in nearly every shot of that apartment. People can picture it but can’t always name what it is.

Show Answer
A gold picture frame around the peephole (often described as a mirror frame, but it’s an empty frame around the peephole). The story goes that a mirror originally hung there, broke during filming, and they liked the look of the empty frame so much they kept it.

40. In what year did the first episode of Friends air?

People born in the ’90s tend to guess later than the real answer. The show feels like it belongs to the late ’90s, but it started earlier than most people think.

Show Answer
1994. The pilot aired September 22, 1994.

41. How many seasons did Friends run?

Show Answer
10 seasons (1994–2004)

42. What game show does Joey audition for as a host?

Show Answer
Bamboozled. The game’s rules are intentionally incomprehensible, and watching Chandler and Ross try to play it is one of the most underrated scenes in the series.

43. Monica is obsessively competitive and clean. What Thanksgiving dish is she known for being unable to make well early in the series?

Show Answer
This is a trick , Monica is actually an excellent cook. The running joke is that her mother Judy is the one who criticizes everything. However, in the Mockolate episode, she struggles with recipes using a terrible chocolate substitute called Mockolate. If someone says “the turkey,” remind them Monica literally puts a turkey on her head. She never failed at making one.

44. What is the name of the guy Rachel hires as an assistant at Ralph Lauren, largely because she finds him attractive?

Show Answer
Tag Jones, played by Eddie Cahill

The Final Stretch , Prove It

45. What are the names of Phoebe’s brother’s triplets?

Phoebe was the surrogate for her brother Frank Jr.’s children. Naming all three is genuinely hard. Most people get two.

Show Answer
Frank Jr. Jr., Leslie, and Chandler (named after Chandler Bing , though the baby is a girl)

46. What is the significance of “seven” in the context of Monica and Chandler’s relationship advice to the group?

If you know, you know. And you probably learned it when you were too young to fully understand what Monica was drawing.

Show Answer
Monica teaches Chandler about seven erogenous zones for women, numbering them 1 through 7. The scene ends with her enthusiastically shouting “SEVEN! SEVEN! SEVEN!” It’s one of the most quoted moments in the series.

47. What phrase does Ross shout while trying to move a couch up the stairs?

Show Answer
“PIVOT!” , repeatedly, while Rachel and Chandler help him. The couch does not make it.

48. In the final episode, which character says the last line of the series, and what is that line?

People always remember the emotional arc of the finale. The actual last spoken words are much more casual than anyone expects.

Show Answer
Chandler says “Sure” (in response to Rachel suggesting they get coffee). Some sources attribute the last line slightly differently depending on whether you count the “Where?” that follows, but Chandler’s quip is the last line that gets a laugh.

49. How much were the cast members paid per episode in the final season?

They famously negotiated as a group, which was nearly unheard of at the time. The number still feels unreal.

Show Answer
$1 million per episode each. All six cast members earned the same amount after collectively bargaining together , a move that changed how ensemble casts negotiate to this day.

50. The entire series starts with a question. Rachel runs into Central Perk in a wedding dress in the pilot episode. But what are the actual first words spoken in the first episode, and who says them?

I save this one for last because it does something no other friends trivia question does. It makes people realize they’ve watched the pilot dozens of times and never once locked in on the opening line. The room goes completely silent. Everyone’s searching their memory for something they assumed they’d always known. And the answer, when it lands, feels exactly like the show itself: a little neurotic, a little desperate, and completely Monica.

Show Answer
Monica says “There’s nothing to tell! He’s just some guy I work with.” The very first scene is the group at Central Perk, and Monica is deflecting questions about a date. Some people insist it’s Ross who speaks first or that the show opens with the fountain scene. It doesn’t. It opens mid-conversation, like you walked into a room where your friends were already talking. Which, if you think about it, is exactly what the show was always about.
