It’s the answer to “What is Chandler’s job?” People get it wrong constantly, which is the entire joke of that character for ten seasons, and watching someone realize that in real time is one of my favorite things about this topic. Friends is a show everybody thinks they know. The gaps between what people remember and what actually happened are where the best questions live.
I built this set of 50 friends trivia questions the way I’d build a night at a bar: some layups early to get people talking, some gut-punch questions in the middle that split the room, and a closer that makes everyone go quiet. I say “first” and watch people’s eyes flick upward as they count. That pause is everything. Ross has three ex-wives, and the order trips people up more than you’d think.

This one reads easy but I’ve seen confident people get it backwards. Something about Ross’s personality makes half the room assume he’s the younger one.
4. What instrument does Phoebe play when she performs at Central Perk?
5. What phrase is Joey Tribbiani’s signature pickup line?
The real test is whether someone can say it without doing the voice. Nobody can.
6. What are the names of Ross and Monica’s parents?
Everyone remembers the mom being critical of Monica. Fewer people can name both parents without hesitating.
7. Rachel gets off a plane in the series finale. Where was that plane going?
8. What is Chandler Bing’s job for the majority of the series?
This is the question I mentioned up top. It’s practically a running gag that nobody on the show or off it can remember what Chandler does. The answer is genuinely boring, which is the point.
9. In “The One with the Embryos,” Ross hosts a trivia game between the guys and the girls. What do Monica and Rachel lose as a result?
This episode is basically the Super Bowl of Friends trivia. It’s a quiz within the show, and the stakes are real.
10. What is the name of the Geller family’s dog when Ross and Monica were growing up?
11. Joey doesn’t share food. But what is his favorite food?
People shout “pizza” immediately. They’re wrong, and they know they’re wrong the second someone else says the right answer.
12. What store does Phoebe find a severed thumb in, leading to her receiving compensation?
13. What is Monica’s biggest pet peeve?
This comes directly from the quiz episode. If you’ve seen it once, the answer sticks. If you haven’t, you’ll guess “messiness” and be completely wrong about who this character is.
14. Ross has a son named Ben. What is the name of his daughter?
15. What was the name of Joey’s stuffed penguin?
People who watched as kids remember Hugsy like a member of the cast. People who watched as adults somehow don’t.
16. Before she became a chef, what was Monica’s job at the 50s-themed diner?
17. What is Chandler’s middle name?
This is one of those questions where the answer sounds made up. It’s not. The show drops it exactly once and moves on.
18. Which actor played Rachel’s boyfriend Joshua?
19. Bruce Willis guest-starred as the father of one of Ross’s girlfriends. What was his character’s name?
Willis did the role because he lost a bet to Matthew Perry on the set of The Whole Nine Yards. He donated his entire salary to charity. Knowing that makes the answer better.
20. Which future Oscar winner played Ross’s girlfriend Charlie Wheeler?
21. Winona Ryder guest-starred as a college friend of Rachel’s. What was her character’s claim about their past?
22. What was the name of the character played by Tom Selleck?
People remember Selleck’s mustache more than the character’s name. Which, honestly, is fair.
23. Ben Stiller plays a man Rachel goes on a date with. What is his defining character trait?
24. Reese Witherspoon plays which character?
25. How many times has Ross been divorced?
I have literally watched people count on their fingers and still get it wrong. The marriages blur together. Name the wives in order if you want bonus points at your game night.
26. In the trivia game episode, what was the name of Chandler and Joey’s pet chicken?
Everyone remembers the chick and the duck. Almost nobody remembers which name went to which animal.
27. What apartment number did Monica live in at the start of the series, and what did it change to?
This is a production error that became canon, and it’s one of my favorite pieces of Friends trivia to deploy because it rewards the obsessives.
28. What color is Monica’s apartment door?
You’ve seen this door thousands of times. Commit now before you second-guess yourself.
29. What is Phoebe’s twin sister’s name?
30. Ross and Rachel’s first kiss happens in which location?
People say “the apartment” or “Central Perk.” The actual answer is more romantic than either of those, which is probably why people misremember it. We simplify things.

32. Joey played Dr. Drake Ramoray on a soap opera. What was the name of that soap?
33. How did Dr. Drake Ramoray originally die on the show within the show?
The writers gave Joey’s character a death that was both absurd and perfectly soapy. It’s the kind of detail that makes people laugh when they hear it again.
34. What fake name does Joey use when he’s pretending to be someone else?
35. Phoebe legally changes her name after getting married. What does she change it to?
This one’s a trap. People say “Phoebe Hannigan” or “Phoebe Buffay-Hannigan.” They’re both wrong.

Not Bloomingdale’s. Not Ralph Lauren. Those came later. The first one is humbler and people forget it exists.

People born in the ’90s tend to guess later than the real answer. The show feels like it belongs to the late ’90s, but it started earlier than most people think.

43. Monica is obsessively competitive and clean. What Thanksgiving dish is she known for being unable to make well early in the series?
44. What is the name of the guy Rachel hires as an assistant at Ralph Lauren, largely because she finds him attractive?

Phoebe was the surrogate for her brother Frank Jr.’s children. Naming all three is genuinely hard. Most people get two.
46. What is the significance of “seven” in the context of Monica and Chandler’s relationship advice to the group?
If you know, you know. And you probably learned it when you were too young to fully understand what Monica was drawing.
47. What phrase does Ross shout while trying to move a couch up the stairs?
48. In the final episode, which character says the last line of the series, and what is that line?
People always remember the emotional arc of the finale. The actual last spoken words are much more casual than anyone expects.
49. How much were the cast members paid per episode in the final season?
They famously negotiated as a group, which was nearly unheard of at the time. The number still feels unreal.
50. The entire series starts with a question. Rachel runs into Central Perk in a wedding dress in the pilot episode. But what are the actual first words spoken in the first episode, and who says them?
I save this one for last because it does something no other friends trivia question does. It makes people realize they’ve watched the pilot dozens of times and never once locked in on the opening line. The room goes completely silent. Everyone’s searching their memory for something they assumed they’d always known. And the answer, when it lands, feels exactly like the show itself: a little neurotic, a little desperate, and completely Monica.
