The One Thing Everyone Gets Wrong First
Walt Disney was fired from a newspaper job for “lacking imagination.” That fact has appeared in so many motivational posters that people assume it’s apocryphal. It’s not. The Kansas City Star let him go in 1919, and he spent the next few years failing at an animation company called Laugh-O-Gram Studio before it went bankrupt. The man who built the most famous entertainment empire on earth did it after going broke in Kansas City. I’ve opened trivia nights with that story, and it reframes everything that follows. Because Disney trivia isn’t really about how much you’ve memorized. It’s about how much you think you know versus what’s actually true.
These 75 disney trivia questions and answers are built from years of watching teams argue, second-guess themselves, and occasionally flip a table. Some of these are warm-ups. Some are traps. A few are the kind of question that makes a room go completely silent. Let’s get into it.
The Ones You Think You Know
1. What was the first full-length animated feature film produced by Walt Disney?
Everyone reaches for this one fast. And most people get it right. But I’ve seen confident answers of Fantasia and Pinocchio more often than you’d think, especially from people who confuse “first I saw” with “first ever made.”
Show Answer
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). Hollywood called it “Disney’s Folly” during production. It made $8 million during the Depression. Nobody called it that again.
2. What are the names of all seven dwarfs in Snow White?
This is the question that starts arguments at every table. Someone always forgets one and substitutes a name that doesn’t exist. I’ve heard “Smiley” offered with absolute conviction.
Show Answer
Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy, and Dopey. The one people forget most often is Bashful. The one they’re most confident about and sometimes wrong on is Doc, because they second-guess whether he’s a dwarf or just the narrator.
3. What is the name of the fairy in Peter Pan?
A palate cleanser. You need these. Not every question has to draw blood.
4. In The Lion King, what is the name of Simba’s father?
I include this early because it builds false confidence. People start feeling like they’re going to sweep this whole thing. That feeling is useful to me later.
5. What kind of animal is Bambi?
Nobody gets this wrong. But it sets up the next question beautifully.
Show Answer
A white-tailed deer
6. What is the name of Bambi’s rabbit friend?
Still easy. But about 15% of rooms hesitate here, which tells me something about who actually watched Bambi versus who just knows the cultural shorthand.
7. In Aladdin, how many wishes does the Genie grant?
The trick here is that people say three, which is the rule. But Genie actually grants Aladdin’s first wish without Aladdin technically using an official wish. It depends on how you frame the question. I frame it as the rule, not the count.
Show Answer
Three wishes is the rule. Though the Genie saves Aladdin from drowning without being asked, which some fans argue is a freebie that bends the rules.
8. What is the name of the princess in Sleeping Beauty?
This is the first trap. People say Sleeping Beauty. Her name is not Sleeping Beauty.
Show Answer
Princess Aurora (also called Briar Rose by the fairies who raise her). The most common wrong answer is “Sleeping Beauty,” which is the title, not her name. This one catches people every single time.
Where the Floor Gets Slippery
9. What Disney movie features the song “A Whole New World”?
Show Answer
Aladdin (1992). It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and is the only Disney song to hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
10. In Finding Nemo, what is the name of the address Dory memorizes?
People remember that she memorizes an address. They remember the scene. They can hear Ellen DeGeneres saying it. But recalling the actual address under pressure? That’s different.
Show Answer
42 Wallaby Way, Sydney. I’ve watched people mouth this like a prayer trying to pull it from memory. The cadence of it is burned into a generation’s brain.
11. What is the name of the toy store in Toy Story 2?
12. How many brothers does Prince Hans have in Frozen?
This is the one from my excerpt. It’s mentioned once in the movie, in a line that sounds like throwaway dialogue. People who remember it feel like geniuses. People who don’t start guessing numbers like they’re at a carnival.
Show Answer
12 older brothers (making him the 13th in line). The most common wrong guesses are 7 and 3. People default to fairy tale numbers.
13. What was Pixar’s first feature film?
Show Answer
Toy Story (1995). The first entirely computer-animated feature film ever made. It’s easy to forget that before this, nobody had done it. Not once.
14. In Moana, what is the name of the demigod voiced by Dwayne Johnson?
15. What are the names of Cinderella’s stepsisters?
One of them comes easy. The other one vanishes from memory like it was never there.
Show Answer
Anastasia and Drizella. Almost everyone remembers Anastasia. Drizella is the one that escapes people. I think it’s because the name doesn’t sound like it belongs in a fairy tale.
16. What is the name of the sea witch in The Little Mermaid?
17. In Up, where does Carl Fredricksen want to move his house?
Show Answer
Paradise Falls, South America (inspired by Angel Falls in Venezuela). People sometimes say “Angel Falls” which is close enough to argue about, and I’ve let that argument play out at least a dozen times.
18. What year did Disneyland open in Anaheim, California?
Park fans know this instantly. Everyone else is doing rough math based on when they think Walt Disney was alive.
Show Answer
1955. July 17th, specifically. Opening day was a disaster, by the way. Counterfeit tickets doubled the crowd, asphalt was still wet, and a plumber’s strike forced Walt to choose between working drinking fountains and working toilets. He chose toilets.
19. What Disney character is known for the phrase “To infinity and beyond”?
Show Answer
Buzz Lightyear
20. In Tangled, what is Rapunzel’s weapon of choice?
Show Answer
A frying pan. And if you think that’s just a cute gag, it becomes a running motif through the whole film. Even Flynn Rider picks one up by the end.
The Part Where Confidence Starts to Crack
21. What is the name of the kingdom in Tangled?
People who just answered the frying pan question with zero hesitation suddenly go blank here. The movie never makes a big deal of the kingdom’s name.
Show Answer
Corona. Yes, this became a very different word in 2020. I stopped using this question for about two years.
22. What animated Disney film features a character named Hiro Hamada?
Show Answer
Big Hero 6 (2014)
23. In Monsters, Inc., what is the name of the little girl who enters the monster world?
Show Answer
Boo (her real name, shown briefly on a drawing, is Mary)
24. What is the name of Woody’s horse in Toy Story 2?
25. What does “Hakuna Matata” mean?
Everyone knows this. The question is whether they can say it without singing it first.
Show Answer
“No worries” (it’s a real Swahili phrase, not something Disney invented, which surprises a lot of people)
26. In Coco, what is the name of the holiday being celebrated?
Show Answer
Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)
27. What was Walt Disney’s first cartoon character, created before Mickey Mouse?
This is where the room splits. Some people know. Most people have never even considered that there was a before.
Show Answer
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Walt lost the rights to Oswald in a contract dispute, which directly led to the creation of Mickey Mouse. Disney didn’t get the rights back until 2006, when they traded sportscaster Al Michaels to NBC for them. That’s not a joke. That actually happened.
28. Which Disney princess has the least amount of screen time in her own movie?
This generates genuine debate. People start mentally replaying movies trying to calculate minutes.
Show Answer
Aurora in Sleeping Beauty, with roughly 18 minutes of screen time and only 18 lines of dialogue in her own film. She’s asleep for a significant portion of it, which, in fairness, is right there in the title.
29. In The Jungle Book, what type of animal is Baloo?
Show Answer
A bear (a sloth bear, specifically, in the Rudyard Kipling source material)
30. What is the name of the villain in 101 Dalmatians?
Show Answer
Cruella de Vil
31. Which Pixar movie takes place primarily inside a young girl’s mind?
Show Answer
Inside Out (2015)
32. What are the names of the five original emotions in Inside Out?
People always get four. The fifth one slips away like it was designed to.
Show Answer
Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust. Disgust is the one people forget. Which is kind of ironic given that Disgust’s whole job is making sure Riley doesn’t get forgotten about socially.
33. In Beauty and the Beast, what is the name of Gaston’s sidekick?
34. What is the name of the clock character in Beauty and the Beast?
Show Answer
Cogsworth. People frequently say Clocksworth, which sounds right enough that they’ll argue for it.
35. What color is the dress that Cinderella wears to the ball?
I love this question because the argument is built into it. The dress in the movie is silver/white with a blue sheen. But Disney’s marketing has made it solidly blue in every piece of merchandise since 1950.
Show Answer
In the original animated film, the dress appears silver or white with a blue tint. In all Disney branding and merchandise, it’s depicted as blue. I accept blue. But I enjoy watching the purists lose their minds about it.
The Deep Water
36. What is the only Disney animated film with a title character who doesn’t speak?
Show Answer
Dumbo. He never says a single word in the entire film.
37. Which Disney movie was the first to have its soundtrack hit number one on the Billboard 200?
Show Answer
The Lion King (1994). The Elton John/Tim Rice soundtrack dominated that year. People guess Frozen, which also hit number one, but twenty years later.
38. In Ratatouille, what is the full name of the rat who wants to be a chef?
Show Answer
Remy. Not Ratatouille. I’ve seen adults argue that the rat’s name is Ratatouille with the same energy people use to argue about politics.
39. What is the name of Captain Hook’s ship in Peter Pan?
Show Answer
The Jolly Roger
40. In Hercules, who is the villain?
Show Answer
Hades, voiced by James Woods. One of the few Disney villain performances where the actor was encouraged to improvise, and it shows.
41. What are the names of the three fairies in Sleeping Beauty?
Everyone remembers there are three. Getting all three names is harder than it sounds.
Show Answer
Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. Merryweather is always the sticking point.
42. Which Disney princess is left-handed?
This is the kind of question that makes people stare at the ceiling trying to visualize animated characters holding things. It’s wonderful to watch.
Show Answer
Mulan is often cited as left-handed based on how she’s drawn wielding her sword in several scenes, though Disney has never officially confirmed a princess’s dominant hand. Tiana is also sometimes shown using her left hand. The ambiguity is part of the fun.
43. What is the name of the pizza chain that appears in multiple Pixar movies?
Show Answer
Pizza Planet. The Pizza Planet truck is one of Pixar’s most famous Easter eggs, appearing in nearly every Pixar film.
44. In Lilo & Stitch, what is Stitch’s experiment number?
Show Answer
626. People who know this feel a specific kind of pride about it. It’s a membership card for a certain era of Disney fandom.
45. What is the name of the pub in Tangled where all the ruffians sing about their dreams?
Show Answer
The Snuggly Duckling
46. Which Disney villain falls to their death from a cliff or high structure?
The trick is that the answer isn’t singular. Multiple Disney villains die this way. I usually ask people to name as many as they can.
Show Answer
Gaston (Beauty and the Beast), Clayton (Tarzan), the Evil Queen (Snow White), Charles Muntz (Up), and arguably Frollo (Hunchback of Notre Dame). Disney really likes gravity as a narrative device.
47. What was the first Pixar movie to not feature any human characters?
Show Answer
A Bug’s Life (1998). People often guess Cars, but that came eight years later.
48. In Encanto, what is the name of the magical house?
49. What is Scar’s real name in The Lion King?
Most people don’t even know Scar has a real name. It’s referenced in supplementary material, not the film itself.
Show Answer
Taka, which means “waste” or “garbage” in Swahili. His parents apparently named him that before he became a villain, which raises some questions about their parenting.
50. How many Disney theme park resorts exist worldwide?
Show Answer
Six: Disneyland (California), Walt Disney World (Florida), Tokyo Disney Resort, Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Shanghai Disney Resort. People consistently forget Hong Kong.
The Ones That Make People Quiet
51. What is the only Disney Renaissance film (1989-1999) that is not a musical?
This requires people to first remember what counts as the Disney Renaissance, then mentally check each one for songs. It takes a minute.
Show Answer
This is actually a trick framing. All of the commonly accepted Disney Renaissance films (The Little Mermaid through Tarzan) are musicals, though Tarzan is sometimes debated since Phil Collins sings the songs rather than the characters. If you count Tarzan as not a traditional musical, that’s your answer. If you don’t, there isn’t one.
52. In Toy Story 3, what is the name of the daycare center?
Show Answer
Sunnyside Daycare
53. What real-life actress does Ursula’s appearance in The Little Mermaid reference?
Show Answer
Divine, the drag performer and actress known for John Waters films. The animators used Divine as visual inspiration for Ursula’s exaggerated features and proportions.
54. Which Disney character has appeared in the most films?
Show Answer
Goofy, who has appeared in over 130 shorts and features. People always guess Mickey, but Mickey is second. Goofy’s been working harder this whole time and getting less credit for it.
55. What was the last film Walt Disney personally supervised before his death?
Show Answer
The Jungle Book (1967). Walt died during its production in December 1966. The film was released the following October.
56. In Frozen, what is Kristoff’s reindeer’s name?
57. What is the name of the cat in Cinderella?
Show Answer
Lucifer. Disney naming the villain cat Lucifer in a 1950 children’s film is the kind of energy I wish they’d bring back.
58. Which Disney movie features the song “When You Wish Upon a Star”?
Show Answer
Pinocchio (1940). It became the unofficial anthem of the entire Walt Disney Company. People sometimes guess Cinderella or Peter Pan.
59. In Zootopia, what species is the main character Judy Hopps?
60. What is the name of the restaurant Tiana dreams of opening in The Princess and the Frog?
Show Answer
Tiana’s Palace (originally her father’s dream, called Tiana’s Place in some references)
61. Which Pixar film was originally going to be called “Hidden City”?
Nobody gets this. It’s a true stumper and I deploy it when teams are getting too comfortable.
Show Answer
Coco. The working title was changed partly due to trademark concerns and partly because the personal name better captured the film’s emotional core.
62. In Mulan, what is the name of her dragon companion?
Show Answer
Mushu, voiced by Eddie Murphy
63. What is the shortest Disney animated feature film by runtime?
Show Answer
Dumbo, at approximately 64 minutes. It tells a complete, devastating story in just over an hour. Modern Disney films run about 30 minutes longer and often say less.
64. What are the names of Donald Duck’s three nephews?
Show Answer
Huey, Dewey, and Louie
65. In Brave, what does Merida’s mother turn into?
Show Answer
A bear. The whole movie pivots on this transformation, and yet I’ve watched people guess “a deer” and “a wolf” with complete sincerity.
Where Only the Obsessed Survive
66. What is the name of the fictional world where Wreck-It Ralph takes place within the arcade game?
Show Answer
The game is called Fix-It Felix Jr., and it takes place in Niceland. Ralph lives in the dump outside the Niceland apartment building. The geography of that game is weirdly specific for something that’s supposed to be an 8-bit arcade title.
67. Which Disney princess is the only one based on a real historical person?
Show Answer
Pocahontas, based on the real Powhatan woman. Mulan is based on a legendary figure from a Chinese poem, but Pocahontas is the only one drawn from documented history. Whether Disney did right by that history is a whole other conversation.
68. In The Emperor’s New Groove, what animal does Kuzco get turned into?
Show Answer
A llama. This movie is criminally underrated and I will die on this hill at every trivia night I run.
69. What was the original name of Mickey Mouse before Walt Disney changed it?
Show Answer
Mortimer Mouse. Walt’s wife Lillian reportedly convinced him to change it, arguing that Mortimer sounded too pompous. The name Mortimer was later used for Mickey’s rival.
70. In WALL-E, what does WALL-E stand for?
Show Answer
Waste Allocation Load Lifter: Earth-class. And EVE stands for Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator. Pixar names things with the precision of a government contractor.
71. What is the name of the Disney animated film that takes place in a city of animals with different climate zones?
Show Answer
Zootopia (2016), called Zootropolis in some international markets
72. Which voice actor has performed the most Disney villain roles?
This is a deep cut and I don’t expect most people to get it. But someone at every event has this knowledge tucked away.
Show Answer
This gets debated, but a strong case exists for Corey Burton, who has voiced Captain Hook, Judge Doom, and several other villains across Disney TV shows and direct-to-video features. For theatrical films specifically, no single actor dominates the villain roster the way people expect.
73. In Fantasia, what piece of classical music accompanies the sequence where Mickey Mouse is the Sorcerer’s Apprentice?
Show Answer
“The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” by Paul Dukas. The piece predates the film by over 40 years. It was composed in 1897 and is itself based on a Goethe poem from 1797. Mickey’s most iconic scene is built on two centuries of storytelling.
74. What was Disney’s first PG-13 rated film?
Show Answer
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), released under the Walt Disney Pictures banner. It was a gamble that paid off so spectacularly it changed what Disney was willing to make.
75. In the original Toy Story, what is Sid’s dog’s name?
I always end with this one. Not because it’s the hardest question of the night, but because of what happens in the room. Half the people have no idea. The other half close their eyes, and you can see them rewinding to 1995, sitting on a carpet somewhere, watching a movie that changed everything. And the name just comes back to them, not from studying, but from somewhere older and warmer than that. That’s what Disney trivia is, really. It’s not about scores. It’s about the fact that these stories got into us before we knew they were doing it, and asking the right question can pull them back out.
Show Answer
Scud. A bull terrier who terrorized toys and chased Buzz and Woody through the neighborhood. If you remembered that without looking it up, you weren’t just watching Toy Story. You were living in it.
After 9 years of writing music trivia from Rome, Italy, I've developed a theory: the best music questions are the ones where someone at every table is absolutely certain they know it, and about half of them are wrong. My sets have been used by pub quiz leagues across the country, and I take the same care with every set I write.
