Before You Power Up

Krillin has died more times than any other character in the Dragon Ball franchise, and yet almost nobody gets the exact count right. That’s the thing about Dragon Ball trivia. People who love the show are absolutely sure they remember everything. They can describe the Kamehameha wave in their sleep, quote Vegeta’s speeches, tell you which filler episodes to skip. But the details? The actual, specific, canonical details? That’s where confidence becomes a liability.

I’ve run dragon ball trivia rounds at anime conventions and bar trivia nights alike. The energy in the room is always the same: everyone thinks they’re Goku and nobody wants to be the one who blanks on something obvious. These thirty questions are built from that experience. Some will feel like warm-ups. Some will make you question your entire childhood. Let’s go.

The Ones That Feel Easy Until They Don’t

1. What is Goku’s Saiyan birth name?

This is the question I always open with because it lets the room sort itself. The people who get it instantly feel good. The people who hesitate realize they’re in for a longer night than they thought.

Show Answer
Kakarot. Almost everyone gets this one, but I’ve watched people confidently say “Bardock” , that’s his father.
Common wrong answer: Bardock. The brain reaches for the Saiyan name it associates with Goku’s origin, and Bardock gets there first.

2. What planet do the Saiyans originally come from?

The name is a pun, like almost everything in this franchise. Once you hear the answer, you can’t unhear it.

Show Answer
Planet Vegeta (named after King Vegeta). It’s also sometimes referred to as Planet Plant, its original name before the Saiyans conquered the Tuffles.

3. How many Dragon Balls do you need to collect to summon Shenron?

If you miss this one, close the tab. I say that with love.

Show Answer
Seven.

4. What is the name of the martial arts tournament that Goku enters as a child in the original Dragon Ball?

A surprising number of people who only watched Z have never actually seen this tournament play out. It’s worth going back for.

Show Answer
The World Martial Arts Tournament (Tenkaichi Budokai).

5. Who teaches Goku the Kamehameha wave?

Here’s what’s funny. Goku learned it by watching it done once. Master Roshi spent fifty years perfecting it. Goku just copied it on the spot. That detail always gets a reaction.

Show Answer
Master Roshi (Kame-Sennin).

Where Overconfidence Starts to Hurt

6. What is Vegeta’s wife’s name before she marries him?

This is a trick in a way. Her name doesn’t change. But the question makes people panic for a second, and that pause is the whole point.

Show Answer
Bulma. Her name was always Bulma. Dragon Ball characters don’t change their names after marriage.

7. Frieza destroys Planet Vegeta. But in what form is he when he does it?

People picture Frieza in his final form because that’s how they remember him. But the destruction of Planet Vegeta happened long before Goku ever fought him.

Show Answer
His first form (the small, horned form). He didn’t need to transform. He did it almost casually, from orbit, with a single energy ball from his finger.
Common wrong answer: Final form. The brain defaults to the version of Frieza it spent the most time with.

8. What is the name of Goku and Chi-Chi’s second son?

Everyone remembers Gohan. The second son gets brought up less, which is ironic given how much screen time he eventually gets.

Show Answer
Goten.

9. Which character is an android who was originally a human before being modified by Dr. Gero?

There are multiple correct answers here, but one stands out as the character most people forget was ever human at all.

Show Answer
Android 17 and Android 18 are both correct , they were human twins modified into cyborgs. Most people think of 18 first because of her relationship with Krillin, but 17 is equally valid.

10. What wish does Krillin make to Shenron regarding Android 18 after the Cell Saga?

I’ve seen tables argue about this one for five minutes. People remember the sentiment but not the specifics, and the specifics matter.

Show Answer
He wishes for the bombs inside Androids 17 and 18 to be removed. He doesn’t wish to make her human , Shenron can’t do that. He doesn’t wish for her to love him. He just removes the thing that could hurt her.
Common wrong answer: “He wished for her to become human.” The fact that he didn’t, that he asked for something selfless instead of something self-serving, is the whole reason the moment works.

11. In Dragon Ball Z, what is the maximum power level Frieza claims to have in his final form?

Power levels stopped being mentioned after the Frieza Saga for a reason. But this number burned itself into a generation’s memory.

Show Answer
120 million (at full power in his final form). He states his power level at 50% is already over a million, and the commonly cited full power figure is 120 million.

12. What is the name of the technique Tien uses against Cell that actually holds him in place temporarily?

This is one of the great Tien moments. He knows he can’t win. He does it anyway. And the name of the attack is oddly beautiful for something that nearly kills him.

Show Answer
Shin Kikoho (Neo Tri-Beam). One of the few times in Z where a human fighter genuinely affected the outcome of a major battle, even if only to buy time.

The Specifics That Betray You

13. What color does Super Saiyan God turn Goku’s hair?

Not blue. That’s a different form. This is where the transformation hierarchy starts tripping people up.

Show Answer
Red. Super Saiyan God is red. Super Saiyan Blue (Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan) is the blue one.
Common wrong answer: Blue. Because “Super Saiyan Blue” has the word “God” buried in its full name, people merge the two forms constantly.

14. What is Mr. Satan’s real name in the original Japanese version?

In the English dub, he’s sometimes called Hercule. But that’s a localization change. The original name is exactly what you’d expect from Toriyama.

Show Answer
Mr. Satan. That is his name in the original. “Hercule” was created for the English dub and some international versions to avoid religious controversy.

15. Who actually kills Frieza?

Not who defeats him. Not who nearly kills him. Who actually finishes the job. The answer creates a specific kind of frustration in a room full of Goku fans.

Show Answer
Future Trunks. Goku defeats Frieza on Namek but spares him. Frieza survives, gets rebuilt as Mecha Frieza, travels to Earth, and Trunks slices him apart. Goku gets the moral victory. Trunks gets the kill.
Common wrong answer: Goku. The emotional climax on Namek feels like the ending, but it isn’t.

16. What is the Hyperbolic Time Chamber’s ratio of time inside to time outside?

People know it’s “a lot.” But the exact ratio is specific and a little absurd when you say it out loud.

Show Answer
One year inside equals one day outside. Goku and Gohan spent what felt like a year training in there before the Cell Games, but only a day passed for everyone else.

17. Piccolo is from what race of beings?

In the original Dragon Ball, everyone assumed Piccolo was a demon. The reveal of what he actually is lands differently when you’re a kid versus an adult.

Show Answer
Namekian. He’s from Planet Namek. The “Demon King” title was self-given after King Piccolo’s split from Kami.

18. What does Bulma’s name, and most of the Briefs family names, reference?

Toriyama named nearly every family group around a single theme. The Briefs family theme is one of the funniest once you notice it.

Show Answer
Underwear. Bulma comes from “bloomers,” her father is Dr. Brief, her mother is Panchy (panties), her son is Trunks, and her daughter is Bulla (bra).

19. What technique does Goku use to travel instantly from one location to another?

Everyone knows this one. But I include it because I once watched someone say “teleportation” and then argue for three minutes that it counted.

Show Answer
Instant Transmission (Shunkan Ido). He learned it from the Yardrats after escaping Namek.

Deep Cuts and Quiet Obsessions

20. In the original Dragon Ball, who is the first person to successfully ride the Flying Nimbus besides Goku?

The Nimbus only carries those who are pure of heart. That rule eliminates almost everyone you’d guess first.

Show Answer
Gohan (as a child). Master Roshi famously falls right through it. Chi-Chi could also ride it as a child, but Gohan is the first character shown riding it after Goku in Dragon Ball Z.

21. What is the name of the fusion technique that requires two people to perform a synchronized dance?

Not the Potara earrings. The one that looks ridiculous and requires you to match your partner’s power level and body movements exactly.

Show Answer
The Fusion Dance (Metamoran Fusion), taught by Goku, who learned it from the Metamorans. It produces Gotenks (Goten + Trunks) and Gogeta (Goku + Vegeta).

22. What does the “Z” in Dragon Ball Z stand for?

This one always creates a satisfying silence. People have watched hundreds of episodes without ever thinking about it.

Show Answer
It stands for “Zenkai,” meaning “last time” in Japanese, as Toriyama originally intended Z to be the final chapter of the Dragon Ball story. It symbolized the end. Which is ironic, given that Super, GT, and multiple movies followed.

23. Who is the Supreme Kai that Goku and the others meet during the Buu Saga, and what is his actual name?

Everyone calls him Supreme Kai. Almost nobody remembers his real name, because the show barely uses it.

Show Answer
Shin. His full title is the Supreme Kai of Universe 7, but his personal name is Shin.

24. In Dragon Ball GT, what causes Goku to turn back into a child?

GT is polarizing. But this question sorts out who actually watched it versus who just has opinions about it.

Show Answer
Emperor Pilaf accidentally wishes on the Black Star Dragon Balls for Goku to be a kid again. It’s an accidental wish. The entire premise of GT starts with a mistake by a recurring joke villain.

25. What is the name of the angel who serves as attendant and martial arts teacher to Beerus, the God of Destruction?

This character is arguably stronger than Beerus, which is a detail that changes how you watch every scene they share.

Show Answer
Whis. All angel names in Dragon Ball Super are puns on alcoholic beverages , Whis comes from “whiskey.”

26. How many times has Goku actually won the World Martial Arts Tournament?

This is my favorite dragon ball trivia question to ask in a room. People start counting on their fingers. They always count too high.

Show Answer
Once. He won the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament against Piccolo Jr. That’s it. He lost to Jackie Chun (Master Roshi in disguise) in the 21st, lost to Tien in the 22nd, and the 25th was interrupted by Buu. The greatest fighter in the universe has one tournament win.
Common wrong answer: Two or three. People conflate “Goku dominated the fight” with “Goku won the tournament.”

The Final Stretch

27. What is Yamcha’s signature technique?

Yamcha gets disrespected constantly. But he had a real fighting style once. The name of his signature move is cooler than he ever got credit for.

Show Answer
Wolf Fang Fist (Rogafufuken). He was genuinely intimidating in the original Dragon Ball. Then the Saibaman happened, and his reputation never recovered.

28. In Dragon Ball Super’s Tournament of Power, which universe wins?

The stakes of this tournament were existential. Entire universes erased. And the answer to who wins it is, in classic Dragon Ball fashion, not quite what you’d expect.

Show Answer
Universe 7. Android 17 is the last fighter standing, technically making him the MVP. Goku and Frieza sacrifice themselves to take out Jiren, leaving 17 alone on the stage.

29. What is Vegeta’s famous quote about his own pride, typically paraphrased as his most iconic line?

Everyone has their own version of this quote in their head. The actual line is slightly different from how most people remember it, which is fitting for a character who’s always slightly different from how people remember him.

Show Answer
“I am the prince of all Saiyans!” , the exact phrasing varies across dubs and scenes, but the core declaration of royal Saiyan pride is his defining line. In the Buu Saga, his speech to Goku before his sacrifice , “You are number one” , is arguably more powerful, but the prince line is what people quote.

30. Who is the creator of the Dragon Balls on Earth, and what is his relationship to Piccolo?

This is the question I save for last because it connects the very first episode to everything that follows. The Dragon Balls themselves, the thing the entire franchise is named after, exist because of a decision one character made centuries ago. And that decision is tangled up with the existence of the show’s first great villain. When people hear the answer, they get quiet for a second. Not because it’s hard. Because it reframes the whole story.

Show Answer
Kami created the Earth’s Dragon Balls. Kami and King Piccolo were originally one being , a Namekian who split himself into two halves, one good (Kami) and one evil (King Piccolo), in order to become pure enough to take the role of Earth’s Guardian. The Dragon Balls, the thing that makes everything in this story possible, exist because a lonely alien tried to become good enough to protect a planet that wasn’t even his. Every wish, every resurrection, every saga that hinges on gathering those seven spheres traces back to that single act of self-division. The whole franchise is named after the byproduct of one Namekian’s identity crisis.
