50 Gilmore Girls Trivia Questions That’ll Separate the Casual Viewers from the People Who Have Opinions About Dean

By
Claire Nelson, Music Journalism Cert.
A young woman enjoys popcorn while watching a movie in a cinema theater.

The pilot episode of Gilmore Girls almost didn’t have the town of Stars Hollow in it at all. Amy Sherman-Palladino originally pitched a version set in a more generic Connecticut suburb before the network pushed back and she built the world that made the show what it is. That decision, made in a room none of us were in, gave us Luke’s Diner, the town square, Kirk’s entire existence. Every piece of Gilmore Girls trivia traces back to a world that almost wasn’t.

I’ve run Gilmore Girls trivia nights where the room split cleanly into two camps: people who watched it live on the WB and people who found it on Netflix in their twenties. They know different things. The live watchers remember the cultural context, the theme song playing over promos. The Netflix crowd knows the deep cuts because they binged it three times in a year. Both groups are dangerously overconfident. These 50 questions are designed to find the cracks in that confidence.

The Stuff You Think You Know

1. What is the name of the town where Lorelai and Rory live?

I’m starting here because if you can’t get this one, the next 49 are going to be a long road.

Show Answer
Stars Hollow, Connecticut

2. What Ivy League university does Rory attend?

Everyone gets this right. But ask them which other school she got into and you’ll watch the certainty drain from their face.

Show Answer
Yale University. She was also accepted to Harvard and Princeton.

3. What is the name of Lorelai’s parents?

The way Edward Herrmann said “Lorelai” with that specific mix of affection and disappointment is something no other actor could have pulled off.

Show Answer
Emily and Richard Gilmore

4. What day of the week do Lorelai and Rory have dinner at the Gilmore mansion?

This is the engine of the entire show. Without this dinner, there’s no series. The deal Lorelai makes with her parents to fund Chilton is the thing that forces every relationship in the show to exist.

Show Answer
Friday. Friday Night Dinner.

5. What is the name of the prep school Rory attends before Yale?

People who watched casually sometimes say “Chiltern” or “Chilmark.” It’s a word that sounds right in several wrong configurations.

Show Answer
Chilton Preparatory School. Common wrong answer: “Chiltern” , the brain fills in a more familiar word.

6. What does Luke Danes do for a living?

He owns the diner. Everyone knows this. But the follow-up question is where it gets interesting.

Show Answer
He owns and runs Luke’s Diner.

7. Before it was a diner, what was Luke’s building originally?

This is one of those details the show drops early and then references just enough that it sticks in the back of your mind without ever becoming a quiz-ready fact.

Show Answer
A hardware store , William’s Hardware, run by Luke’s father.

Where the Floor Starts to Tilt

8. What is Sookie St. James’s profession?

Easy question, but it sets up the harder one coming.

Show Answer
She’s a chef , and later co-owner of the Dragonfly Inn with Lorelai.

9. Who played Sookie St. James in the original unaired pilot before Melissa McCarthy took over the role?

This is the one that separates the fans from the scholars. The original Sookie was played by someone you’d recognize, and the recasting is one of those happy accidents that changed television.

Show Answer
Alex Borstein, who went on to voice Lois Griffin on Family Guy. She couldn’t do the show due to a holding deal with MADtv.

10. What is the name of the inn where Lorelai works at the start of the series?

Not the Dragonfly. That comes later. The number of people who confidently say “Dragonfly” here is genuinely surprising.

Show Answer
The Independence Inn. Common wrong answer: The Dragonfly Inn, which Lorelai doesn’t open until Season 4.

11. What book is Rory reading in the very first scene of the pilot?

This is a question that sounds impossible but actually rewards the attentive viewer. The show made a point of Rory’s reading from the very first frame.

Show Answer
Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

12. How old was Lorelai when she gave birth to Rory?

People waver between 15 and 16 on this one. The show mentions it enough that most people have a number in their head, but it’s often the wrong one.

Show Answer
16 years old

13. What is Rory’s full legal first name?

This is the kind of question where half the room says it confidently and the other half goes “wait, really?”

Show Answer
Lorelai. Her full name is Lorelai Leigh Gilmore , she was named after her mother.

14. What does the “L” on Luke’s baseball cap stand for?

I love this question because everyone has a theory. Some say “Luke’s,” some say “Larry” for some reason. The truth is the most obvious answer and people still overthink it.

Show Answer
It’s the logo of the Williams College Ephs , a nod to Luke’s father, William. Though the show never explicitly confirms this, the “L” is widely accepted as representing Luke’s Diner or simply “Luke.”

15. What musical instrument does Lane Kim play?

Lane’s entire secret life is one of the show’s best sustained storylines. The lengths she goes to hide things from Mrs. Kim are genuinely impressive.

Show Answer
Drums

16. What is the name of Lane’s band?

They go through a couple of names, which is what makes this tricky. People remember the energy of the band more than the actual name.

Show Answer
Hep Alien

17. What is the name of Lane’s strict, antique-dealing mother?

Emily Kuroda played this role with such specific, terrifying love that “Mrs. Kim” became shorthand for a certain type of parent in an entire generation’s vocabulary.

Show Answer
Mrs. Kim (her first name is never revealed in the original series)

The Boyfriend Gauntlet

This is the section that starts fights. I’ve seen it happen. Someone says “Dean was the best boyfriend” and the room turns feral. Let’s see how well you actually remember them.

18. What is the first thing Dean says to Rory?

Not the first conversation. The first words. This one’s harder than it sounds because people remember the vibe of the scene more than the actual dialogue.

Show Answer
He doesn’t technically speak first , they notice each other at Stars Hollow High. But their first real exchange happens at Doose’s Market, where he comments on her reading habits.

19. What does Dean build for Rory that becomes a major plot point?

This is the question that makes Team Dean people misty-eyed and Team Jess people roll their eyes so hard you can hear it.

Show Answer
A car , he builds her a car for her birthday.

20. What causes Dean and Rory’s first breakup?

This moment aired in 2001 and people are still arguing about whether Rory was wrong. She probably was. But the way it plays out is more complicated than either side wants to admit.

Show Answer
Dean tells Rory he loves her, and she responds with “I love the car” instead of saying it back. He breaks up with her at the dance marathon.

21. What author does Jess Mariano write margin notes about in Rory’s copy of a book he borrows?

The book-borrowing scene is the moment the show tells you exactly who Jess is going to be in Rory’s life. It’s also the moment Dean should have started worrying.

Show Answer
He writes notes in the margins of Rory’s copy of Howl by Allen Ginsberg. Though the broader answer is that he annotates her books , the specific one that gets referenced most is her copy of Oliver Twist that he “borrows.”

22. What is the name of Jess’s book that appears in the revival?

The fact that Jess becomes a published author is either deeply satisfying or completely implausible depending on how you feel about his character arc.

Show Answer
The Subsect

23. What is Logan Huntzberger’s family business?

The Huntzbergers represent everything the show is ambivalent about: old money, media power, the question of whether Rory is becoming the thing Lorelai ran away from.

Show Answer
Newspaper and media , the Huntzberger family owns a media empire. Mitchum Huntzberger is a newspaper magnate.

24. What secret society does Logan belong to at Yale?

The Life and Death Brigade episodes are some of the most visually ambitious the show ever attempted. That umbrella jump is iconic.

Show Answer
The Life and Death Brigade

25. What nickname does Logan give Rory?

It’s a small detail that tells you everything about how Logan sees her. And how she lets herself be seen by him.

Show Answer
Ace (short for “Ace Reporter”)

26. In the original series finale, what does Rory turn down from Logan?

This is the moment that defined how you feel about Rory Gilmore. Some people think she made the right call. Some people think she made the brave call. And some people think she was out of her mind.

Show Answer
His marriage proposal. She says no because she wants to pursue her journalism career.

The Stars Hollow Deep Cuts

27. How many jobs has Kirk had throughout the series?

Nobody gets the exact number. The point is that Kirk has had more jobs than any human being in television history, and the show never once explains how or why.

Show Answer
The exact count varies depending on how you define “job,” but it’s widely cited as over 60 different occupations across the series.

28. What is Kirk’s cat’s name?

The Kirk-and-his-cat subplot is exactly the kind of thing that makes Stars Hollow feel like a real place inhabited by genuinely unhinged people.

Show Answer
Cat Kirk

29. What instrument does the town troubadour play?

Grant-Lee Phillips playing himself on a street corner in a fictional Connecticut town is one of those creative decisions that shouldn’t work but completely does.

Show Answer
Guitar

30. What is the name of Taylor Doose’s market?

Taylor is the kind of character who would absolutely insist his store’s name be used in full at all times.

Show Answer
Doose’s Market

31. What annual Stars Hollow event involves couples dancing for hours to win a prize?

The dance marathon episode is one of the show’s best. It’s also the site of one of its most devastating breakups. If you know, you know.

Show Answer
The Stars Hollow Dance Marathon (“They Shoot Gilmores, Don’t They?” , Season 3, Episode 7)

32. What is the name of the bridge where Jess is often seen reading?

It’s not officially named in the show, but every fan knows exactly which bridge you mean. It’s become a pilgrimage site for people who visit the real filming locations.

Show Answer
It’s simply referred to as “the bridge” , a footbridge over a pond in Stars Hollow. No official name is given.

33. What is the name of the rival town that Stars Hollow competes against?

The town rivalry episodes are peak Stars Hollow absurdity. The fact that an entire community can mobilize over petty competition with a neighboring town is honestly one of the most realistic things about the show.

Show Answer
Woodbridge

34. What is the name of Luke’s nephew who comes to live with him?

If you got this wrong, I genuinely don’t know what show you’ve been watching.

Show Answer
Jess Mariano

35. Who is Jess’s mother?

The Liz episodes gave us a whole new dimension of Luke. Watching him navigate his sister’s chaos while trying to keep Jess from following the same path is some of Scott Patterson’s best work.

Show Answer
Liz Danes (Luke’s sister)

The Emily Gilmore Section (Because She Deserves One)

36. How many maids does Emily go through during the course of the series?

Nobody knows the exact number. That’s the point. The revolving door of household staff is a running joke that also quietly tells you everything about Emily’s need for control.

Show Answer
The show never gives a definitive count, but it’s estimated at over 30 maids across the series. The turnover is a recurring bit that never stops being funny.

37. What organization is Emily heavily involved in?

The DAR plotline is also the vehicle for one of the show’s most controversial arcs , Rory’s dropout period. Emily’s delight at having Rory in her world is one of the most complicated emotions the show ever portrayed.

Show Answer
The DAR , Daughters of the American Revolution

38. In the revival “A Year in the Life,” what does Emily do that shocks her social circle?

Kelly Bishop’s performance in the revival is the best thing about it. I’ll die on that hill. What Emily does after Richard’s death is the most honest portrayal of grief the show ever managed.

Show Answer
She moves to Nantucket, works as a docent at the Whaling Museum, and essentially leaves her Hartford society life behind. She also wears jeans and a t-shirt, which for Emily Gilmore is basically a revolution.

39. What is Richard Gilmore’s profession?

Richard’s professional life is the backdrop for some of the show’s sharpest commentary on class and ambition. His retirement arc in the early seasons is quietly devastating.

Show Answer
He works in the insurance business , he’s a Vice President at an insurance firm, and later starts his own company.

40. What gift does Emily give Lorelai that causes a major argument between them?

There are multiple correct answers here because Emily and Lorelai argue about gifts roughly every six episodes. But one gift stands above the rest.

Show Answer
The most notable is the full-size replica of Lorelai’s childhood dollhouse, though the pretzel-making machine and various unwanted home furnishings also caused friction. The dollhouse is the answer that gets the most recognition.

The Part Where I Find Out If You Were Paying Attention

41. What is the name of Lorelai’s dog?

Paul Anka the dog is named after Paul Anka the singer, and the show later had the actual Paul Anka appear. It’s the most Gilmore Girls thing that ever happened on Gilmore Girls.

Show Answer
Paul Anka

42. What song does Lorelai sing at karaoke that signals the state of her emotional life?

This scene is burned into the memory of anyone who watched it. Lauren Graham performing this song while falling apart is one of the show’s most raw moments.

Show Answer
“I Will Always Love You” by Dolly Parton (the Whitney Houston version) , she sings it at the karaoke bar after her breakup with Luke.

43. What TV show does Emily become obsessed with that surprises everyone?

The idea of Emily Gilmore watching this particular show is funny enough. The idea of her having opinions about it is transcendent.

Show Answer
The show references Emily watching various programs, but the most memorable is her fascination with reality TV , she becomes particularly engaged with a show on The Travel Channel in the revival. In the original series, she’s shown watching C-SPAN.

44. What is the name of the Dragonfly Inn’s horse?

The horse that lives at the Dragonfly is barely a character and yet somehow has more personality than several recurring humans on the show.

Show Answer
Cletus (and later Desmond)

45. Who does Paris Geller end up with in the revival?

Paris’s love life is one of the show’s great underrated arcs. She approaches romance with the same terrifying intensity she brings to everything else.

Show Answer
She’s divorced from Doyle (Danny Strong) in the revival, though the finale hints at a reconciliation between them. Common wrong answer: people assume she’s still married to Doyle.

46. What is the name of Lorelai’s business partner and best friend’s husband?

Jackson and Sookie’s relationship is one of the few on the show that’s consistently stable and healthy, which in Stars Hollow terms makes it basically science fiction.

Show Answer
Jackson Belleville (Sookie’s husband, a produce farmer)

47. What does Michel Gerard keep as pets in the revival?

Michel’s entire personality is being annoyed by everything, so the idea of him having pets that require patience and affection is one of the revival’s best jokes.

Show Answer
Dogs , specifically Chow Chows

48. In what season does Rory lose her virginity, and with whom?

This is the question that starts the loudest arguments. Not because people disagree about the facts, but because of who it’s with and what it means for her character. I’ve seen tables go silent when the answer comes up.

Show Answer
Season 4, with Dean , who is married to Lindsay at the time. This is arguably the most divisive plot point in the entire series.

49. What network did Gilmore Girls originally air on before it moved?

The network history of this show is a piece of early-2000s TV trivia that younger fans almost never get right. They assume it was always where they found it.

Show Answer
The WB (The Warner Bros. Television Network). It moved to The CW when The WB and UPN merged in 2006 for its final season. Common wrong answer: people say “The CW” for the whole run.

The Last One

50. What are the final four words of the revival, “A Year in the Life,” which Amy Sherman-Palladino said she had planned since the beginning of the series?

Amy Sherman-Palladino talked about these four words for years before the revival made them real. She always said she knew how the show would end, and when she lost control of Season 7, those words went unspoken. It took nine years and a Netflix deal to finally hear them. When they land, they change everything you thought you knew about where this story was going. They also guarantee that no conversation about Gilmore Girls will ever truly be finished.

Show Answer
“Mom?” “Yeah?” “I’m pregnant.” , spoken by Rory and Lorelai. The implication that Rory is repeating her mother’s history is the most emotionally loaded ending the show could have given us.
