The Overconfidence Is Strong with This One
The most common wrong answer I’ve ever heard at a trivia night wasn’t from someone who didn’t know Star Wars. It was from someone who was absolutely certain they did. They’d seen every film multiple times, owned the box sets, had opinions about the machete order. And they got the color of Mace Windu’s lightsaber wrong. Not because they didn’t know it was purple. Because they second-guessed themselves into saying blue.
That’s the thing about Star Wars trivia. The franchise is so embedded in the culture that people carry around half-memories and confident assumptions that feel like knowledge until you test them. Everyone knows Darth Vader is Luke’s father. But ask them what Vader actually says in that scene, word for word, and watch the room split. This set of star wars trivia is built from years of watching that happen in real time. Some of these will feel easy. Some will make you argue with the answer. A few might genuinely surprise you, and those are the ones I like best.
You Think You Remember the Original Trilogy
1. What is the famous line Darth Vader says to Luke in The Empire Strikes Back?
I put this first on purpose. Half the room will say “Luke, I am your father.” They’ll say it with their chest. And they’ll be wrong.
Show Answer
“No, I am your father.” The misquote is so widespread it’s become the real quote in most people’s minds. It’s the Mandela Effect’s most famous exhibit. Most common wrong answer: “Luke, I am your father” , because that’s how it’s been repeated in pop culture for 40 years.
2. What was the first Star Wars movie ever released in theaters?
A warm-up, sure. But you’d be surprised how many younger fans instinctively want to say The Phantom Menace because of the episode numbering.
Show Answer
Star Wars (1977), later retitled Star Wars: Episode IV , A New Hope.
3. What planet is Luke Skywalker raised on?
4. Who shot first in the Mos Eisley cantina: Han Solo or Greedo?
This one isn’t really a trivia question. It’s a loyalty test. In the original 1977 theatrical cut, there’s only one answer. But George Lucas made sure this would be argued about forever.
Show Answer
Han Solo shot first in the original theatrical release. Lucas altered it in the 1997 Special Edition so Greedo shoots first (and misses from three feet away, which has never sat right with anyone).
5. What type of creature is Chewbacca?
Show Answer
A Wookiee. Two e’s at the end. I’ve seen people lose tiebreakers on the spelling alone.
6. In A New Hope, what is the designation of the cell block where Princess Leia is held on the Death Star?
This separates people who watched the movie from people who absorbed it.
Show Answer
Cell block AA-23. Detention block AA-23, to be precise. Her cell number is 2187, which is itself a reference to the short film 21-87 by Arthur Lipsett, a film that deeply influenced George Lucas.
7. What are the odds of successfully navigating an asteroid field, according to C-3PO?
Show Answer
Approximately 3,720 to 1. And Han doesn’t want to hear it.
8. Who is the only non-Jedi to use a lightsaber in the original trilogy?
People think about this for a second and then their face changes. It’s a great moment.
Show Answer
Han Solo, who uses Luke’s lightsaber to cut open the tauntaun on Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back.
9. What is the name of Boba Fett’s ship?
Straightforward for anyone who cares about Boba Fett, which is apparently everyone now.
Show Answer
Slave I. (Lucasfilm has since marketed it as “Boba Fett’s Starship” on some merchandise, which tells you everything about the current era.)
10. In Return of the Jedi, what does Leia say when Han tells her Luke is her brother?
Most people get the general idea. Almost nobody gets the exact words.
Show Answer
“I know. Somehow, I’ve always known.”
The Prequels Will Betray You
11. What is the name of the planet where the clone army is created?
Show Answer
Kamino. The ocean planet that was erased from the Jedi Archives, which is one of the more genuinely unsettling plot points in the prequels.
12. Who played Queen Amidala’s decoy in The Phantom Menace?
This is one of those questions where the answer is better than the question.
Show Answer
Keira Knightley. She was 12 at the time, and apparently their own mothers had trouble telling them apart on set.
13. What is Anakin Skywalker’s home planet?
Show Answer
Tatooine. Same as Luke. That rhyming poetry George Lucas was always talking about.
14. How many members sit on the Jedi Council?
People either know this cold or they start counting on their fingers and land on the wrong number.
Show Answer
12. Always 12. Including the one seat Anakin was given but told not to get too comfortable in.
15. What color is Mace Windu’s lightsaber?
I mentioned this one in the intro. It’s the easiest question in this set and I’ve still seen people miss it when the pressure’s on.
Show Answer
Purple. Samuel L. Jackson personally requested it so he could find himself in the big battle scenes. The man knows what he wants.
16. What is the name of General Grievous’s bodyguard droids?
Show Answer
MagnaGuards (IG-100 MagnaGuards). They carry electrostaffs and they’re genuinely more threatening than Grievous himself in most scenes.
17. In Revenge of the Sith, who tells Anakin the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise?
The memes have made this so famous that some people forget the actual scene. It’s played completely straight, and it’s one of Ian McDiarmid’s best moments.
Show Answer
Chancellor Palpatine (Darth Sidious), during the opera scene at the Galaxies Opera House.
18. What planet does Obi-Wan Kenobi fight Anakin on at the end of Revenge of the Sith?
Show Answer
Mustafar. The lava planet. If you said “that lava planet” at a trivia night, I’d probably give it to you, but I’d make you sweat first.
19. Who is Count Dooku’s Sith name?
Show Answer
Darth Tyranus. A lot of casual fans never catch this because the films mostly call him Dooku. Most common wrong answer: people just say “Count Dooku” again, slightly confused.
20. What species is Jar Jar Binks?
Everyone has an opinion about Jar Jar. Almost nobody remembers his species name.
The Details That Hide in Plain Sight
21. What is the call sign of the pilot who destroys the first Death Star?
People say “Luke Skywalker” and look at me like I’m wasting their time. That’s not what I asked.
Show Answer
Red Five. Luke’s call sign during the Battle of Yavin.
22. What was Yoda’s original puppet operated by and voiced by which performer?
Show Answer
Frank Oz. The same man behind Miss Piggy and Fozzie Bear. I love telling people that the wisest being in the galaxy shares a voice actor with a karate-chopping pig.
23. What language do the Jawas speak?
Show Answer
Jawaese. It was created by sound designer Ben Burtt using sped-up recordings of the Zulu language.
24. In the original trilogy, how does Emperor Palpatine first appear in The Empire Strikes Back?
This is a fun one for purists. The original theatrical release used a completely different face.
Show Answer
As a hologram. In the original 1980 release, the Emperor was played by Marjorie Eaton with chimpanzee eyes superimposed over her own, voiced by Clive Revill. Ian McDiarmid was digitally inserted in the 2004 DVD release.
25. What substance is Han Solo frozen in?
26. What is the Millennium Falcon’s claim to fame, according to Han Solo?
Show Answer
It made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs. Yes, a parsec is a unit of distance, not time. Fans have been arguing about whether this is a mistake or intentional worldbuilding since 1977. Solo: A Star Wars Story tried to settle it. The argument continues.
27. What is the name of the forest moon where the second Death Star’s shield generator is located?
People say Endor. And they’re sort of right. But sort of right is the most dangerous place to be in trivia.
Show Answer
The forest moon of Endor (sometimes called the Sanctuary Moon). Endor is technically the gas giant the moon orbits. The film itself blurs this, so I’ll accept Endor in a live round. But I’ll note the distinction out loud, because I’m that person.
28. What actor provided the physical performance of Darth Vader (not the voice)?
Show Answer
David Prowse. He delivered all of Vader’s lines on set in his West Country English accent, and the cast didn’t know James Earl Jones would dub the voice until the premiere. Prowse apparently never fully got over it.
29. What is the name of Luke’s childhood friend who also joins the Rebellion and flies in the Battle of Yavin?
Show Answer
Biggs Darklighter. Most of his scenes were cut from the theatrical release, which makes him one of the most important characters you barely see.
30. How old is Yoda when he dies in Return of the Jedi?
Show Answer
900 years old. “When 900 years old you reach, look as good you will not.” One of his best lines, delivered while dying.
The Sequel Trilogy and the Arguments That Come With It
31. What is Finn’s stormtrooper designation?
Show Answer
FN-2187. There’s that number again. The same as Leia’s cell in A New Hope. J.J. Abrams loves a callback.
32. Who is the first character to speak in The Force Awakens?
Almost everyone guesses wrong on this one. Their brain jumps to the main characters.
Show Answer
Lor San Tekka, played by Max von Sydow. He’s the old man on Jakku who gives Poe the map. Most common wrong answer: Poe Dameron or Kylo Ren.
33. What is the name of Kylo Ren’s crossguard lightsaber’s distinctive feature, and why does it look unstable?
Show Answer
The cracked kyber crystal inside it causes the blade to appear unstable and fiery. The crossguard vents are lateral exhaust ports that prevent the crystal from overloading. It’s a broken weapon wielded by a broken person, which is genuinely good character design.
34. What are the last words Luke Skywalker says to Kylo Ren in The Last Jedi?
Show Answer
“See you around, kid.” Delivered as a Force projection from halfway across the galaxy. Whether you love or hate that film, Mark Hamill sold the line.
35. In The Rise of Skywalker, what is the name of the planet where the final battle takes place?
Show Answer
Exegol. The hidden Sith world. I’ve run this question at events and had tables of self-described superfans draw a complete blank.
36. What is the name of the small droid that BB-8 befriends in The Rise of Skywalker?
Show Answer
D-O. A tiny cone-shaped droid with one wheel and the personality of a rescued animal. Voiced by J.J. Abrams himself.
Beyond the Films
37. What is the name of the child in The Mandalorian that the internet called “Baby Yoda”?
Show Answer
Grogu. It took nearly two full seasons for the show to reveal the name, and honestly, most people still call him Baby Yoda. The internet named him first and the internet doesn’t let go.
38. In the animated series The Clone Wars, what is the name of Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan?
Show Answer
Ahsoka Tano. A character who started as divisive and became one of the most beloved in the entire franchise. That arc, both on screen and in the fandom, is one of Star Wars’ best stories.
39. What is the Darksaber, and who created it?
Show Answer
A unique black-bladed lightsaber created by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian ever inducted into the Jedi Order. It became a symbol of leadership for Mandalore. You can’t just pick it up. You have to win it in combat.
40. What is the name of the Imperial officer played by Ben Mendelsohn in Rogue One?
Show Answer
Director Orson Krennic. One of the best single-film villains in the franchise. Mendelsohn’s cape work alone deserves recognition.
The Ones That Start Arguments
41. What is the rule of the Sith regarding their numbers?
Show Answer
The Rule of Two: always two there are, a master and an apprentice. Established by Darth Bane roughly a thousand years before the films. I’ve had people argue there are more Sith than two in the prequels, and they’re not wrong exactly, but the rule is about the ideal, not the practice.
42. What real-world religion most influenced the concept of the Force?
This one gets heated. Lucas pulled from everywhere, but there’s a primary source that scholars and Lucas himself have pointed to.
Show Answer
Taoism, along with elements of Buddhism, Hinduism, and the writings of Joseph Campbell (particularly The Hero with a Thousand Faces). The light side/dark side duality maps most directly onto the Taoist concept of yin and yang. But Lucas was a blender, not a purist, which is why this question starts arguments.
43. How many Star Wars films has composer John Williams scored?
People start counting on their fingers and almost always miss one.
Show Answer
Nine. All three trilogies: the original, the prequels, and the sequels. He did not score Rogue One (Michael Giacchino) or Solo (John Powell, though Williams wrote the Han Solo theme).
44. What classic film technique did George Lucas use for the opening crawl, and where did he get the idea?
Show Answer
The opening crawl was inspired by the Flash Gordon serials of the 1930s and 1940s, which used scrolling text to set up each episode. Lucas originally wanted to make a Flash Gordon film but couldn’t get the rights, so he made Star Wars instead. The entire franchise exists because of a licensing failure.
45. What was the working title of Return of the Jedi during production?
Show Answer
Blue Harvest, with the tagline “Horror Beyond Imagination.” They used a fake title to avoid fans and price gouging at shooting locations. It worked.
The Deep End
46. What actor has appeared in every single Star Wars theatrical film (Episodes I through IX)?
Not who you think. Not a human, either.
Show Answer
Anthony Daniels, who plays C-3PO. He is the only actor to appear in all nine saga films. Kenny Baker (R2-D2) appeared in the first six but passed away in 2016.
47. What is Order 66?
Show Answer
The command issued by Palpatine that activated the clone troopers’ inhibitor chips, compelling them to kill their Jedi commanders. It’s the mechanism for the Jedi Purge. The Clone Wars series made this exponentially more painful by making you love the clones first.
48. What is the name of the garbage compactor on the Death Star that nearly crushes Luke, Leia, Han, and Chewbacca?
This is the kind of question that makes a certain type of person very happy and everyone else very annoyed.
Show Answer
Garbage compactor 3263827. If someone at your table knows this off the top of their head, buy them a drink. They’ve earned it.
49. What is “Duel of the Fates” and what is the language of its choral lyrics?
Show Answer
“Duel of the Fates” is the John Williams composition that scores the lightsaber battle between Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace. The choir sings in Sanskrit, with the lyrics adapted from the Celtic poem “Cad Goddeu” (“The Battle of the Trees”). Whatever you think of the prequels, this piece of music is untouchable.
50. In the original 1977 script, what was Luke Skywalker’s last name?
I save this one for last because it changes how you think about the whole thing. The franchise that defined modern cinema almost had a completely different name at its center. Every time I drop this answer in a room, there’s a pause. Not because it’s hard. Because it makes people realize how many small decisions had to go exactly right for Star Wars to become Star Wars.
Show Answer
Starkiller. Luke Starkiller. George Lucas changed it because he felt it sounded too violent. The name survived in various forms: Starkiller Base in The Force Awakens, and the protagonist of The Force Unleashed video games. But imagine a world where the hero’s name was Luke Starkiller. It’s a different franchise. It’s a different feeling entirely. And all of that turned on one man deciding a name was too aggressive for his farm boy from Tatooine.
Music and film rounds are where trivia nights either come alive or fall flat. I've been writing them in Madrid, Spain for 6 years, and I believe a good music question should make everyone at the table feel something, even when they get it wrong.
